Euclidius submitted a new resource:

Euclid's Nightmare - I will make you hurt...

Venture deep into the darkest depths of my mind and experience this never-before-seen quake campaign made by a super-nerdy 18-year-old.

It features 20 brand-spanking-new maps all hand-crafted by me. (Includes my very first maps!)

Not only this, but it boasts an original score composed in the style of the quake soundtrack along with a few new surprises.

Some levels were made with Progs_Dump v_300.

E2M1 I hit some texture bugs.

Same thing in e2m? (clock tower). I have the distinct feeling this is me only.

Also in the house. THE house.

E2M1 I full cleared the level but the bars in front of the exit never opened. Not sure if it's button operated or I missed a trigger, ended up noclipping it once I realized the enemy count was complete.

In the secret slaughter map (which is sick by the way) the teleport to the second arena was broken for me (I kept teleporting 2 feet to the right). Somehow the closest set of monsters were already woken up so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Also, the portal at the end of the same level takes the player back to the level they entered the secret level from instead of the next level. If this is intentional to make them do that surprise fight that's fine (if a bit tedious since you have to clear the level again), but I imagine it'll confuse people.

Massive caveat, the setup I'm playing on is jank. I'm running fteqw built from master on Ubuntu 22.04 under an opengl 3.0 card. If you can't reproduce and of these I wouldn't worry too hard about it, it's probably just my shitbox. I'm going to do another run on nightmare on a modern machine with Ironwail.

E1M3 absolutely slaps, I'll be adjusting my review accordingly once I finish (for as much as you care about the opinion of some random jackass on the internet 🤣).

edit: Well apparently I can't change the review since you responded to it. If you're able to adjust your response feel free to add that I wrote this and that I'd bump it to a 4 without thinking. *I also think a lot of people are not getting that your description of the pak is a NiN reference and are instead thinking you were trying to be pretentious*

After playing further, my complaint about shamblers/vores is fair *for the first two levels till you get the full arsenal (I also may have missed a super shotgun e1m1 so that's my bad).* E1M3 is an absolutely sick map and episode 2 has had some bangers. The main issue with e1m1/m2 is that you don't have the full arsenal yet and it's small horde of low/mid enemies with a shambler or vore behind it over and over. That has disappeared entirely as of episode 2 and everything else I said that's good shows up more and more. There are maybe 2 encounters in episode 3 I found tedious but considering the sheer amount of encounters? Batting way above average. Finished on normal and will absolutely go back for nightmare.

I actually like e1m2 but I was getting quite tired of chewing through shambles and vores by that point.

I am curious at the lack of any spawns. Personal preference? I usually have the opinion of Vores that most people have of Spawns (i.e. I don't enjoy playing on maps that spam them). Spawns can add some fun chaos to a fight with infighting as long as you don't Sandy Peterson Pain Maze spam them.

Having now finished it I really like your use of Vores and Shamblers, I just have an immediate highly negative reaction to lots of Vores (They often completely kill the pacing and I hate tediously plinking them from behind a pillar with low tier weapons, which you almost never had me doing which is great!). Like, for example, I was prepared to be real annoyed in e2m1 having to platform directly into a Vore, until I realized there's literally 2 armors and 4 healths right before that encounter. Good show.

And yeah, the music slaps (shout out to Dusk at the very end).

edit2: The maze right before "spoiler land" is hilarious and a boomer ass reference, I loved it. Not being able to edit my review now doubly annoys me.

edit3: Lots of reorganizing and some more bugs.

Yeah Rogue's Way was made after Descending Darkness and during The Downward Spiral. Squid Base is a really long level, I can't say I blame you for getting tired. But you can always quick save, leave the game, and come back later. But yeah e1m3 (Die Six) is a great map. Had alot of fun building it.

You're right, I don't use spawns at all because I HATE THEM. NEVER USE SPAWNS IN YOUR MAPS THEY ARE THE WORST ENEMY IN ANY ID GAME. WORSE THAN PAIN ELEMENTALS AND LOST SOULS. I HATE THEM HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE. I hate them times infinity plus fuck them.

Also I have those texture bugs too, Idk why they happen but they'll be fixed in 1.1.

Also yeah the part in Salrath's Demense was funny. I grew up with that screensaver on my windows xp computer and I just had to homage it in the pack because of Plutonia Map 11 (Hunted). It was a perfect reference imo.

But yes, this pack ain't perfect. I still have a long way to go in improving my maps and their pacing but this is not a bad first compliation by any means. I have high standards when it comes to boomer shooter action and I know exactly what I want in each encounter and why. Thanks for playing :)

I'm not sure if this is only on my end, but I have noticed that vkQuake has trouble loading the map chasmofsuffering, basically getting stuck in an infinite loading loop. This doesn't happen with Ironwail though. Just thought you should know. :)

I'm pretty sure the following is not intentional. Maybe it needs to be fixed? (Spoiler below)
After exiting the secret level slaughter2me, I got sent back to salrathsdemense, which is the map where I found that secret level! Shouldn't episode 2 just end there since salrath is its last map anyway?

This was in vkQuake, if it's any useful.

Euclidius updated Euclid's Nightmare with a new update entry:

UPDATE 1.1

Hello! My name is Euclidius, and several criticisms of my maps were taken to heart! Difficulty has been balanced around lower difficulties so the experience is no longer quite as frustrating for people less experienced with Quake, however, the original brutal challenge nearly unaltered remains in Hard mode and Nightmare.

Several bugs were fixed like re-usable switches, and missing textures. Some of the levels have even been given quality-of-life improvements over the 1.0 release. This is...

If you don't like people complaining about difficulty, you probably shouldn't discourage them from reducing the skill setting. It also makes you look extremely adolescent, but that one doesn't affect other mappers as much.
