Grit Under the Eyelid

Grit Under the Eyelid is my first solo release for Quake, for Arcane Dimensions 1.8 Patch 1. This is primarily single player focused, but it does have co-op starts dropped in.

This was originally intended to be released as part of Rotting Jam, but the stars didn't quite align for me to complete this in time. Instead, it's been expanded upon, and mixed up with Makkon's since-updated texture set.

This makes some pretty extensive use of the jump boots for exploration, and includes a lot of platforming as a result. As a note, this map uses difficulty settings not just on enemies and items, but on some walls as well, meaning that some of the jumps will be a little trickier on the hard setting.

Skill settings will need to be selected in AD's own start map or the console before playing. This only contains a .bsp and .lit file, and uses a skybox present in AD's files, as well as track 11 (original Quake soundtrack). Tested in Quakespasm & VKQuake.

Latest reviews

A very enjoyable map focused more on exploration rather than shooting. I must admit that I had trouble getting back to the initial section of the map. The presence of so many shamblers is surprising, but ultimately it contributed to the map's atmosphere.

Quite fun. I'm glad to see these Makkon textures used. A few I had seen in demo stuff but I don't think I've seen them in maps.

I didn't realize at first you could break open the tombs but it's fine, gave me ammo later on.

The double jump boots are fun, wish we saw them more.

Don't have time to type a big review, but I enjoyed this a bunch... thanks! Some neat progression through different areas (in theme, layout, and challenges).

I can see what another review was saying about how this map could rock a more sophisticated level of detail, but on the "nice to look at" spectrum of Quake maps out there it's batting quite a bit above average, and it's consistent in its presentation.

Overall a happy surprise to come across this one!
Even though it was very difficult to raze the bosses to the ground at the end of the map [Grit Under the Eyelid], I have to say that I had a lot of fun playing through this map. I was very impressed by how much attention to detail was put into the architecture. The acid areas sometimes made me think I was going to die digitally. But in most cases there were always enough protective suits available. That is, if you found them! Incidentally, there is also a secret in one of these acid pools. I found the 11 secrets and some of them were needed. Some of the battles were very intense and required a certain amount of skill in handling your own mission. I also really enjoyed the many jumps. It was good that there were also jump bots. I give full stars for this very good [Arcane Dimension] map.

A new map for AD is always welcome.
( Will there ever be a new release? )

A wonderful map, suspense guaranteed.

Nice secrets, maybe a little bit too easy, because I found them all ;)
The brickwork could have been more detailed.
But that's peanuts.

Beautiful and mysterious map. Sometimes it was hard to find my way around but it ended up being very rewarding. Encounters were dangerous but the level design turned it into a fun time. Five stars!

really cool AD map, loved how it used the jump boots as a major mechanic for moving around and gating progression

Great map. No complaints. Cool visuals and cool encounters. Faaar above average map. Perhaps encounters are quite predictible, but totally solid nevertheless. My fav encounter is that platforming section with ogres & vores. Also worth mentioning that I was always a fan of platforming (when used as switch of pacing, extra activity) so in here I was extra satisfied with platforming

Pretty good. Nice use of the powerups. Felt a little under-detailed for the texture set, which I thought was a bit of a shame given how nice some of the angled layout work and architectural ideas are.

This is a great map. Had a lot of fun playing this map. Never got boring, Difficulty at 'hard' was ok. Loved the quad runs that help a lot to deal with the Shamblers.

will replay to find the last secret.
