Quake has been around a long time. I still remember playing some custom maps and even doing some mapping way back when I was an early teen but outside of a few map packs I stumbled across over the years I'm not very familiar with a lot of what's out there. When it comes to one of my other favorite games, Doom people recognize names like Scythe and Hell Revealed or Sunlust and Sunder. It has a large enough community that things are well documented and easy to find. Sadly when it comes to Quake things are a bit different. Information is much more scattered and the amount of community content is far smaller so the average person has to do quite a bit of digging. I was glad to stumble on this site and hope it grows to fill that gap. For the sake of sparing myself some digging along with the hope of creating a thread that may also help others I'm interested in anything that has some historical significance, offers a good deal of quality or innovation, is generally interesting in some way or is just plain fun. So what are the big names out there? What's some good classic stuff? What's some good modern stuff? What would you consider essential? Or anything else you think is noteworthy.

@radiatoryang made an article about this. He features a few "Playlists" which have the most highily regarded maps in the community themed towards era/visuals/ect.
Other than that, you can sort the Quaddicted map archive by "Rating" and find a million and one timeless classics. For me, 5 big must-plays are:
  1. Arcane Dimensions
    • One of the most popular Quake mods for a reason. New weapons, a truckload of new enemies, randomizers for the base campaign, and absolutely classic maps from several huge names in the community. Highlights are Grendel's Blade, Necromancer's Keep and Tears of the False God.
  2. Underdark Overbright
    • A set of seriously good vanilla-style maps, made to showcase the features of the "Copper" mod. It's probably the best rendition of classic Quake gameplay out there and looks pretty to boot.
  3. SMEJ1 and SMEJ2
    • Two episodes made by the Finnish Quake community, featuring some of the most brutal and intense gameplay out of the bunch. Takes you to the high heights of a snowy mountain, a techbase in the sky, a secret volcano facility, ect.
  4. Rubicon Rumble Pack
    • Pure techbase indulgence. Featuring one of the biggest maps ever made for Quake (over 1000 monsters) and also features many new monsters that fit right into the Quake theme, not ripped from any other mod/game.
  5. Alkaline
    • What Arcane Dimensions is to the fantasy theme, Alkaline is to the base theme of Quake. Features several new weapons, like 30+(?) new robotic/base-themed monsters, and maps from some of the most acclaimed names in the modern scene.

  • Leptis Magna by Ionous & Pulsar (Arcane Dimensions)
  • Roba El Ehaliyeh by Ionous (Xmas 2019 Jam)

Personally I'd always recommend Rubicon 2 before someone plays RRP.

I didn't stick w/ Quake really past the early 2000's so I can't claim to be an authority on the multiplayer scene. But it seems to me that most of the fragmented Quake community that remains is focused on SP.

I've put together a list of the 20 or so "best" maps from multiplayer, both from the little I can remember of the 90's as well as the maps used in competitive play since that time. I play these on rotation w/ my son w/ bots and we have a blast. He plays w/ the Block Quake mod while I play w/ a gore mod 😁

Of the maps that come preloaded w/ the game:

Of the community maps:

My favorites to date... it's something that can change, but at the moment I think these are the maps I've replayed the most!

Bestial Devastation (Damaul)
The Final Threat (than)
Ceremonial Circles (czg)
Adamantine Cruelty (Vondur)
The Marcher Fortress (Kinn)
The Occupied Base (than)
Moldy Tower (necros)
Rubicon 2 (metslime & czg) - specially "Hydroexploitation Plant" and "A thousand years into the past"
Honey (czg) - all pack
Subterranean Library (than)
Horde of Zendar (sock)
The Ivory Tower (sock)
Rubicon Rumble Pack (ijed, mfx, Hrimfaxi) - specially MFX map
AD - Journey into Firetop Mountain (sock)
AD - The Forgotten Sepulcher (Giftmacher & sock)
AD - Foggy Bogbottom (mfx)
AD - Crucial Error (mfx)
The Dark Portal (than)
UDOB - Pit of the Living Dead (Lunaran)
MGE1 - Fadding Embers (czg)

What I value in a map is:

- Place feeling with intelligent layout: space reuse with loops and interesting backtracking. I want to unlock this castle progressively, to feel that I am conquering, not advancing from room to room through corridors in a linear direction.
- Not totally linear, not totally sandboxy. Just to feel I can explore and got freedom in combat.
- Good combat design: AI in quake is limited, each encounter must be thought out and each monster has a function on the map, including patrols
- Clear visualization of objectives: what spaces I need to unlock and how to do it. Knowing what the buttons I press do and where are the doors that the key I got opens.
- Pacing and progressive difficulty curve, with a final climax. I want to feel it like an epic adventure!
- Layout: correct scale, neither too big nor too small. Avoiding symmetry, using different heights, verticality, midfloors, horseshoe paths... good use of sight lines!
- Original, interesting and different architecture. This is where the designer's artistic spirit has to shine!
- Good use of textures. How brushwork can be convincing or not. Also new textures and pixel art made by the mapper is nice too if it is done well.
- Gloomy and sinister atmosphere... this is Quake: I want dungeons, abandoned bases, sewers, blood, rust, mold...

Excellent points! They're quite broad and generally applicable and I think resonate with most people. Something that could be used as a general checklist for most Quake maps.
