Ferric Oxide

Map requires: [ Copper v1.30 | not included ]

This map was the result of three things that I wanted to do. Wanted to make something largely inspired by parts of E1M6 & Episode 3, wanted to make something more closed-in, and wanted to do some basic stuff with trains.

Much like what ended up happening with Outpost Auriga IV, I got really caught up in the detailing step and lost track of time.

Most of the textures come from either vanilla or MG1. The two yellow cross-light textures are from Kona's Necrobrood mini-episode.

More of a series of clinical, stage-managed encounters than a place to explore and experience. Technically proficient, I guess sure, but feels characterless and sterile.

Overall, I enjoyed this quite a lot. I especially love that it was born out of some very specific personal goals. That kind of stuff always results in very unique stuff with personal character.

I've attached a commented playthrough, where all my feedback points are given as I'm playing.

Mostly, while I liked the idea of the final sequence, it could have been much much better with some more effort put into making the sequences/waves more interesting.

Agree with others. Very solid, fun, long and well balanced map, except for press trap and elevator grenades. I played on Hard and just barely managed to stay alive, occassionally I had zero ammunition and had to make monsters infight - I think that's a plus! Definitely worth playing, but have cheats handy for those two spots.

I think I'm getting old, or is it just that my responsiveness has diminished? With 60 years under my belt, either my eyes or my hands somehow no longer want to interact in sync! 🙂 Anyway, in normal mode I chewed my lip on the enemies for 2 hours. In the end, I played Easy in Baby mode. And lo and behold, half the grandpa got it... Now to the actual map, which was really fantastically done. I was amazed at the attention to detail. The lighting is a feast for the eyes and I was able to catch a few secrets, although I went a bit overboard with one. I saw the missing ones, but they were no longer my cup of tea... I found the final finale, with several stages, gigantic. I didn't quite understand where the silver key had gone. Apart from that, I can only warmly recommend playing this map!

A well-made map, but traps with a moving spiked panel and homing grenades are something terribly difficult. The music is chosen very correctly.

Superb level design and artistic style, great use of textures on inspired geometry. The grenade-spitting walls part was a bit too hard for me, but overall a good map.

Very nice map with one of my favourite texture theme. Great combat setups in tight spaces and a few surprises are waiting for you.
Great idea with the large elevator. Even the dogs & horseshoe part is manageable after a few tries.
