Snack Pack 3: Trick or Treat - Halloween-themed episode with custom weapons and monsters!

View attachment 4002

In the third installment of the Snack Pack series, mappers came together to contribute maps toward an 8-map Halloween-themed episode, with 3 extra maps in the hub as bonus levels. The pack includes a new 'Penetrator' stake gun weapon, the Rotary Shotgun from Dwell, and the Gaunt from Quoth as well as an updated Copper mod that features new Nightmare mechanics!

The gaunt/shambler fight at the end of Bloodfalls is the least fun I've had playing Quake in quite a while. I mean, it can be done, as I survived it on Nightmare after a couple of tries, but it's just the very opposite of fun. I think I'll stop playing the Snack Pack 3 right there. A pity as I really liked it up until that point.

...lower the difficulty? No one is forcing you to play Nightmare.

Also worth mentioning that Bloodfalls ending is the toughest encounter in the whole pack. So you better check the other maps
PS. It's drastically harder than anything else in here on any difficulty
PPS. Also all maps are more fun with shotgun start. But that's subjectively

Not going to lie, I didn't have this much problem with the fight (and I played it 3 times over for bug-fixing), but I can totally see how it would be tough-as-nails. Playing on Nightmare and then saying "This is too hard for me" is pretty silly though.

Good map pack; I really liked the Annihilation Conduit end battle, which required more experimentation than usual. There seems to be a bug with difficulty setting, where if you select nightmare and then go into one of the bonus maps, it will revert back to normal. The main 8 maps don't reset the difficulty. Played on Ironwail 0.7.0

I asked a few people to try and replicate this and they couldn't, so this isn't a bug on the mod's end I don't think. I personally use IW 0.7.0 as well so it certainly isn't a Source Port issue either.

Yeah, as the king of "I play on skill 0 for a reason", I really don't understand complaining about things being super hard on the super hard skill level... (especially when this is the "new nightmare" in Copper, so it's going to be a learning experience for people anyway).

That said, that fight is probably the hardest thing in the campaign so far for me, at 50% through the main campaign without trying the "bonus maps", and I shudder to think what it's like on skill 3 based on how it was on skill 0!

I'd call this too harsh, however I will say I didn't really vibe with the enemy mix there (on normal). The gargoyles are basically hitscans if you can't maneuver, have non-insignificant hit points, and could shoot you through the falls.

I would have vibed with this more with a different enemy mix or if there was a way to get quake enemies to simulate hearing and sight (like they know you're there and move toward you but can't insta-zap you through a sight line you can't see through).

I did otherwise like the level.

Piercer is great! I like how it`s realised in Masu`s map as a single - weapon quake game. Such experience never seen in Quake before.
Snack Pak is great overall. Congratulations with release!
Hope to play the Piercer Jam one day.

As an average player, I have no hesitation in enabling god mode when things get tough. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that it's cheating. I'm here to have fun and admire the artistic talents of the creators: if the gameplay stops me doing that, then I'll change it to suit me. This is likely heresy for purist Quake players and I'm fine with that.

The beauty of Quake and other similar games is you can choose how to play (or cheat) however you like. Why stop playing based on one map that annoyed you? Cheat, or skip, whatever -- there's really no reason to get all bent out of shape aboout it.

I will say that whilst I agree in general (there's quite a few maps over the years that I've godmoded or noclipped bits of), I *am* determined to beat Comfy's map without cheats, even on skill 0....

:D

Edit to add: subsequently, I did beat Comfy's map on skill 0, after about 80 goes (helped by 5 or 6 saves spaced across the map, mostly in the final part). *Many* of my deaths were due to falling into the void, and the remaining third or so were due to being surrounded without a nearby pent or quad.
