It is noteworthy that no one mentioned the "Quadinfernal" (early access) and "Slave Zero X: Episode Enyo" mods on the forum.

Here are links to the original sources:

Everyone should definitely play the second mod. Only some sounds and sprites remain from the original game.

+1 for the Excellent for Slave Zero X; a very polished and enjoyable mod. It's clear that a lot of care was put into it, and the weapons are tons of fun.

It's probably the fastest and smoothest FPS I ever played. I'm using Ironwail and playing with vsync on at 120 FPS and I've never experienced zippier gameplay in a first-person shooter (I almost can't believe that I once considered 25-30 FPS in Quake 1 and Quake 2 back in the day on my old Stealth 2 video card to be fast as lightning). It's a quality production and everyone should check it out but I'm personally not really into the aesthetic. I like it dark and grungy; you know, like Quake ;)

Slave Zero X is an excellent modification.

The new weapons are great without being too different from the quake weapons they replace. I liked the handgun, which is a good rapid-firing weapon that turned out to be my weapon of choice for long-range sniping. The shotgun gibs less powerful enemies into recognisable body parts.

Some enemies are quite tough and you won't last if you get caught in their fire for too long, even wearing armour.

The maps are nicely architected brutalist, decaying, grubby urban landscapes. The plentiful graffiti was a nice touch.

I really enjoyed Slave Zero X. As noted by others, the weapons were great - I particularly enjoyed the two yellow machine pistols, they were like full auto airsofts. The exploration was a lot of fun and the architecture was impressive and detailed. The new enemies were well designed and challenging. A really great mod.
