I don't know if this forum is the best place to ask, but given Hexen 2 is a Quake 1 engine game, I figured I would ask this. I have only played the original Hexen and never gave Hexen 2 a try. After watching Civvie11's Hexen 2 vid, I decided to give it a shot.

Firstly, what is the best source port for Hexen 2? Is Quake FTE better than Hammer of Thyrion? Or is there another better source port?

Secondly, what gameplay tips can you guys give to a new Hexen 2 player? Like recommended class or general hints.

I've seen Civvie11 video about it (and Dwars playthrough), but I'm not a fan of Hexen 2 and I cannot help out here. Anyway there's a "hexen2" channel on Quake Mapping Discord. Most likely people from there are also here, but you might get answer faster there :)

I use Hammer of Thyrion and find it to be the best overall. You can easily get the music working, too.

I would suggest playing as the class that closely resembles your favorite class from the first game and go from there. Here's what I mean by that:

Paladin = Fighter
Crusader = Cleric
Necromancer = Mage
Assassin = New class, a bit more like a stealth based character

Thanks for the reply. However, I have already played the game and it seems like the best or most widely recommended source port among Hexen 2 community is uHexen2-shanjaq. It's a fork of Hammer of Thyrion (aka uHexen2) with a few more bugfixes (the necromancer's 2nd weapon no longer has transparency issues) and a probably a few more modding/mapping features as well.

As for Classes, I agree with your post. There is also the Demoness if one has the Portal of Praevus installed. To play as Demoness in base game, just start PoP campaign as Demoness and then open the console and type "map demo1".

Hopefully this would help future Hexen 2 players reading this thread.

I my experience, Hammer of Thyrion (or a derivative) is the best. I completed the base game + extension on it last year.
Quake FTE looked promising (and the only port that I know of with model interpolation) but it has too many bugs.
