Marooned

Updated 02/01/2026 -
This is a re-release of Marooned to be compatible with Arcane Dimensions. The majority of changes between this version and the Mjolnir version are adjustments to monsters, weapons and items. Only small tweaks have been made to the actual map, it remains largely the same. This re-release is intended to reach a wider audience that may have skipped it due to its Mjolnir exclusivity, or prefer the Arcane Dimensions mod.

Marooned is designed to be played with an engine that supports skyrooms, such as Quakespasm Spiked or FTE. Other engines like Ironwail and VKQuake are fully compatible, but you will not see the various ships/meteors/UFO's flying in the background, it will only display the standard skybox.

Original description -
Marooned is a map originally meant to be released as a secret map with the full version of Mjolnir. First started by MFX many years ago, he entrusted me to finish it under his guidance. The end result is a Doom 3 inspired map utilizing features of the Keep mod, the player finding himself thrown in a three way battle between futuristic and demonic enemies.
Quakespasm Spiked or FTE is required to view the skyroom (ships flying and meteors floating by) Ironwail or any other engine will just show the skybox.
The map is fully finished from start to end, but has not been playtested in any lengthy capacity.
The unfinished folder contains various maps, sources and a monster that are unfinished and or unusable in their current state that Tronyn and I have worked on.

Marooned is dedicated to Dustin "Tronyn" Geeraert, a revolutionary mapper and a very dear friend who was taken from us far too soon. I miss you. Rest in Peace.

Important
- This map requires Mjölnir or Arcane Dimensions to work;
- To properly run the map set heapsize to: 2097152;

Example:
quakespasm-spiked-win64.exe -heapsize 2097152 -game ad

Man this is impressive in concept. I feel like it's part of a larger episode which, had MFX built an entire episode, might be the most epic release ever. Certainly commercial quality. It doesn't really fit with Mjolnir, even the enemies don't work so well in these tight corridors.

But it's really only a small taste because in it's current state it's hard to play. quakespasm (spiked), ironwail wouldn't run it, only vkquake. The suggested -heapsize 2097152 just gives an error saying I don't have enough memory (of 30gb ram) but 205000 ran it fine. But pretty quickly after only 10 enemies I kind of felt like this was supposed to be played with full weaponry so it would be extremely hard to get through this with just the basic stuff. I don't know maybe it is possible but I wasn't in the mood for a quickload marathon fighting supernailgun enforcers in tight corridors with a shotgun.

The part where the lights go out is awesome. Then the demonic monsters appearing, the outdoor section. Man what a fantastic level to experience and it looks amazing. Only mark down would be some lighting is a bit bright.

But not so much the gameplay with the unbalanced weapons and to be honest too many different monsters thrown in.

Really, Really a great map! Took a couple days to get it running as on my system only FTEqw64 (which I had not ever used before) would run properly without error. All other engines had errors, mostly the inability to climb ladders. Some "crashing". But it was worth the effort! Thank You for the great work !!!!!
Pretty great! A large part of the experience here is from the visuals and setpieces, granted, but there's nothing wrong with that. Really this is one of the best scifi themings in a Quake map.

I think the map largely avoids an issue I remember from some 2000s-era "looker" maps ... overlarge proportions and simple layouts, places that felt like giant boring box-corridor-box sequences. This map is generally more interesting to get around in than those. The other end of that design spectrum is when a map introduces too many visual greeblies to snag your movement in smaller spaces; there's some of that here, but it didn't annoy me too much.

I liked that the weapon set was pretty tame, only adding the laser gun. One of the things I didn't enjoy about previous plays with the Keep mod was juggling a huge set of weapons with dubious reasons to choose one over the other. Not a problem here.

On the other hand the Keep mod is used to good effect here in populating a couple of distinct monster factions. It's far from a new thing to have two enemy factions that are also hostile to each other, but it's a lot of fun here! Cool to watch some fights work themselves out, and then entertaining to jump in and clean up.

I didn't have any issues with the progression, but I suspect I may have gotten a bit lucky. I ran across the final door while doing some extra poking-around in an out-of-the-way spot, so that when I found the relevant key much later it was only a minor puzzle to find my way back. If I hadn't previously found that door, it would have been a real head-scratcher.

I'm sure that with a big mod like Keep and complex architecture like this, there are bound to be bugs and jankiness. I didn't happen to run across much of that FWIW. As mentioned in the comments thread there is one spoiler-ish thing that I found can go wrong when loading a save, although noclip will easily recover from that particular issue. I do still need to figure out how to go _down_ a ladder in this mod though. :-)

Finally, I know there's some discussion in the comments thread about how to properly launch and run this map. I can't blame anyone who is getting frustrated over that. But FWIW, here's what worked for me:

* Ironwail 0.8.0 (in my case, running on Linux)
* Mjölnir installed in the "mjolnir" mod folder, including its "Patch 1"
* This release installed in the "Marooned" mod folder
* Launching Ironwail with the arguments: -game mjolnir -game Marooned

Real good science fiction stuff.

An almost perfect Horror Sci-Fi setting. Great details and there is lots to explore. I only missed the Xenomorph and some Facehuggers to appear in the next corridor.

Played with vkQuake. You need to change max_edicts from the default 8192 to 10000+.

The map design/style looks amazing.
I spent some time going through this map and I was delighted.
Great job! Thank you for that and I wish you to continue working and completing this masterpiece.
