Makkon Textures

some updates regarding stone, the very first wad I made: I've started over. what this means is that the original stone wad is now going to be called makkon_stone_legacy, and will not continue to be updated; it will still continue to be available for download. the new makkon_stone has been built completely from scratch, without needing to be beholden to the patterns and conventions that I started in my early days when I was less experienced.

my primary goals for this new stone set is color variation, both in being less monochromatic and in having a better breadth of variety, and clarity in forms/shape/texture. I've eliminated patterns and color variations that I felt were redundant or were too similar to each other to be useful. I've made many new patterns that don't exist in the legacy wad.

here are some examples of what the new stone wad looks like.

some early tests of more color variations as well. there are 24 total color variations per pattern, which includes many natural stone colors, some of the classic odd colors like teal/blue/purple and a new deep unnatural red, and 4 moss and snow variations.
the light source in these images is a light blue like a nighttime scene, maybe not the best way to showcase but it's what I captured at the time.

I'm also trying to lean into gothic features for the stone, and later I'd like to lean into castle features. here's how some of the gothic textures are looking in context, they are still heavy WIP

So to be sure: stone set is updated (remade), right? Or stonetiles files too?
THANKS for your work, the quality is astonishing
it's not an update. it's a complete remake, from scratch. textures don't have the same names, but many of the patterns and trims are the same size and layout. the original stone wad will be renamed to makkon_stone_legacy, and this new stone wad will take the name makkon_stone.
I'm not really sure about stonetiles, it's awfully wasteful and full of color combos that look bad and nobody will ever use. I don't expect to do the same thing for the new stone wad.

In general I think any combos can be made manually by cutting actual brushes. There's no real need in creating colors combos as textures. So I offer to just leave usual colors without any combos at all

some (successful) experiments in dedicated stair textures. these are arranged in such a way that all you have to do is align a single face, and then transfer to the rest in a single click-drag. these will be included in the new stone wad, as well theme-appropriate versions to the tech, industrial, and urban wads

turns out remaking the stone set has consequences, now there's a disconnect between stone bricks and rock cliffs. so I am remaking the following:
nature
horror
wood/building

here's a preview

😲 Wow. I'm new to Quake this year but discovered your work early on. Absolutely stunning, and this new update looks quite astonishing!

Will it be possible to eventually buy the true-color high-res versions of all your textures? I've been playing around with making higher-res Quakey environments for a personal project... your art work in high res would take it to another level. For example, in this shot I've used your stone textures scaled at 0.25 which I think looks great:

I'll be selling these textures to indie devs by end of year, but they won't be full resolution. it'd be a lot of work to go back through the hundreds of graphs to export the tens of thousands full res textures, and also they are built specifically for the resolution they're at: 512x512. they simply don't hold up at higher resolutions, I didn't make them with all the proper scale of details

@Makkon Cool, thanks for the reply. 512^2 is still great and you have so many size options for brickwork, it's all good. I'm looking forward to seeing your updates, the existing stuff is amazing already. Your art has really inspired me out of a creative slump, I love your "quake doodles" on Twitter and I'm playing around with similar stuff. Thank you for sharing your work: it's inspiring.

some recent Gothic progress: it's probably finished, pattern-wise. I just need to propagate it to metal, marble, and wood, which is not simple as the different materials will require a bit of manual work to look good. especially metal and wood.
if I'm being perfectly honest, it's an insane set of textures, and are some of my best work. they are not the easiest to use, but when you understand how to use fence textures effectively, you can do some cool things with it.

for the stone set, I've also introduced several kinds of edge decals. these are great for making any kind of shape you want and being able to hide the seams underneath

I've also made a set of stone destruction textures and edge decals. they are also not the easiest to use, I will try to provide documentation when it's released.

you might have noticed some new brick patterns as well. these are non-uniform messy brick patterns that I tried to accomplish before, but was only able to figure out recently.

for the industrial set, I've made a complete set of metal crates and barrels. pretty happy with these, and they are straightforward to use if you have experience with previous crate/container textures I've made (like in the tech set).

you might have noticed a new olive drab color. I've of course propagated this color to all the other industrial sets, but I've also propagated it to the tech set. in addition, I took the time to make the tech set dirtier and more run-down to match the industrial set, making them more stylistically compatible to use together.

Oh my goodness @Makkon these look absolutely stunning! I can't begin to imagine the amount of work that you've put into this: your textures have achieved legendary status now, not just for their amazing quality, but the sheer number too.

I can't wait to start using these new versions. I'm doing castle-like doodles (not playable levels) and the new stone and irregular bricks will be perfect for that. I also have a large mod that I'm planning, maybe 10-12 levels that will take me several years to complete I'm sure. I'm also sure that I'll be able to texture the entire thing using all your textures. I can't wait :)

What an amazing body of work you've created: I'm sure it will be celebrated for years as the pinnacle of Quake textures.

Makkon updated Makkon Textures with a new update entry:

update edit: many of the zip files weren't properly updated before upload. also the new WIP Nature remake was merged in but wasn't ready to replace the old version, so I've added nature_legacy as well. everybody gets some new cliff textures as a treat

This is amazing, you've completely outdone yourself sir. Undoubtedly your best texture work. The new stone wad alone is remarkable, so many new themes to play with and all those extra variants. And I completely love the new gothic stone wad, it's a masterpiece, a creation of sheer beauty. It's time I stop tinkering and build something significant with your textures. The problem is they inspire so many ideas, it's impossible to decide what to make first!
