Timewarp Cathedral

Installation:

Pop into a new subfolder in your Quake folder called 'timewarp'. Play with
Ironwail (also tested with JoeQuake). The map's name is also 'timewarp'.

Description:

You've been captured by the Chthon cult for dark slipgate experiments.

But these aren't regular slipgates - these enable travel through time. However,
the cult may have bitten more than they can chew when they decided to experiment
on you...

Description, non lore:

My first map (for anything ever), which grew out of control. I can only apologize.
My hope is that this inspires better mappers to use instant teleporter magic in a similar
manner, though I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

This is a gimmick map: through the magic of Alkaline instant teleports, a player
controlled time machine that allows jumping between past and future is present in
many places in the level. Use the machines by shooting the shootable buttons.

Use this time travel ability to solve combat puzzles and find 4-dimensional secrets! Wow!

When you switch timelines, the timeline you left becomes 'frozen' - enemies remain in
place. Use this to your advantage when fighting!

The map is focused on exploration, and so skill 0 is recommended. The higher skills
require mastery of the gimmick and finding secrets to even be possible to finish,
though seasoned Quake players might welcome the challenge.

The time warp can be a little janky: you cannot teleport into an occupied space, the
teleport will throw you back. This is sadly a limitation of the instant teleport
system, at least as-is.

A really cool map. A really cool idea. The biggest regret is that it ended so quickly. I wanted to move around more and more. The fights were good, not too difficult and not too easy. Thank you for your work and for the great execution of the idea. I wouldn't mind playing another level or two with this mechanic.

Perhaps I'm a bit biased as a playtester, but I fell in love with this mechanic and immediately saw the potential it had.
Overall, I think the experience of the map is very solid. The puzzle mechanics make you flex your brain a bit, much more-so if you're secret hunting, and the combat in my opinion does well to string together exploration without being too overbearing.
Fantastic first map, and I think a jam using these progs would be more than welcome (after people recover from QBJ3, of course)

Mixed feelings on this - the central "timewarp" mechanic successfully replicates the concept from Titanfall 2 et al, and the initial puzzles are interesting, although a little forced.
the "bridge" you need to change timeline to get is only needed because it's essentially impossible to jump from the ledge because there's a ladder attached to it for example.

Later puzzles become a bit more realtime timing dependent (I did not manage the "jump over the slime filled room by shooting the timeswitch button as I jumped so I landed on the pillar in the other timezone puzzle because I just couldn't get the timing, so I noclipped it), and the combat challenge seems to ramp up even on Easy to the point where it detracted from the experience. As I'm not a huge fan of Alkaline, this became a DNF shortly after.

(Also, there seems to maybe be a bug: the security cannons don't seem to disable if you try to shoot or hit the override button)

People who are better at traversal than me (and like Alkaline more) may rate this higher!

Thank you for playing. The map is definitely a bit of a tech demo, and calibrated towards being quite challenging with traversal. I'm glad you found it enjoyable despite it not being exactly your cup of tea! :)
