The Altar of Storms

Author: necros

"2 Large maps set in a frozen world. Sort of a tribute to TES4:Oblivion:
The first map is a pseudo open-world map.
The theme for the second map is similar to ayleid ruins and the layout for the second map is based on the 'Miscarcand' (all 3 sections) dungeon." — Necros

An absolute classic. A real adventure with lots of new surprises for the time. When I was getting back into Quake it was this and Sock's maps convinced me Quake level design still offered something amazing 20 years later
Bounced off this map at the time of release for some reason (wasn't really into Quake at the time), but I've just given it another go and it's quite something.

The gameplay is pretty hit and miss, but the scope and vision easily makes up for it. Most of the new additions are fairly tasteful and fit well with the map.
The whole ending sequence is really quite unique.
A real feast for the eyes, one of the grandest quake mods I've played. The scale is excellently captured and the traps and 'scares' are very nicely done, to a point that it doesn't feel off. The zombie hordes in the first map could have been toned down a little as it does take away from that sense of exploration, but otherwise it is a fantastic set that any Quake player must experience.
What you will find in The Altar of Storms mod is incredible build quality for the levels and loads of custom content done pretty decently. At times the experience of getting through this journey can be a bit rough, but it is well worth if once you get to the latter half of it.

I Think the ending is the greatest ending I've seen in Quake mod or a level ever. That alone makes up for all the flaws you might find here. Easy 5/5 and recommendation to play through this at least once. It is an experience.
Brilliant map. Exterior part is pure gorgeous and sets the mood. Interior are a bit samey - reminded me of grey stone Ayleid ruins from TES Oblivion. And at first encounters are a bit bland. But the further you go the more engaging it gets. And fast zombies are perfect enemies! Gave me chills. Final battle is something you won't forget - one of best boss battles ever made for Quake (imo of course). Must-play
While the beginning is quite a slog, and the gameplay might be a little underwhelming, this map pulls off a true "Adventure map" format, and is a must-play experience at least once. Dat ending.
