Quakeguy in Groceries From Hell

Quakeguy in Groceries From Hell

A custom Quake campaign where you live a day in the life of the guy from Quake.

Carry out a variety of mundane tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Feeding the dogs
  • Arguing with the manager
  • Going grocery shopping
  • Getting frustrated about computers
  • Completing epic jumps over horrific pits of slime
  • Hitting offensive paintings with an axe
  • Trying not to die
Do all these and more helping Quakeguy complete ordinary everyday goals over three exciting maps of classic Quake gameplay.

I made this over a few weeks using Trenchbroom because I was feeling nostalgic for the extremely low quality quake maps I used to make back in the day. This is the first single player quake maps I've made in more than 20 years. I did make one deathmatch map right before this one so had a little bit of practice beforehand. I used a bunch of random textures and I tried to credit as many as I could in the readme and used the Quake Compiling GUI by necros0 and played and tested in Quakespasm. I mostly divided it into three maps because when I started I made a heap of dodgy brushes in the first area which blew my vis time out to an insane amount, and rather than redoing it cos I'd already spent way too long on it I decided to end the map quickly and make it a multi map situation and try and learn from my mistakes on the following maps.

After looking at a few of the maps on here and the reviews I gotta say in advance sorry for all the teleporting enemies and ridiculous situations where they spawn right on top of you. I thought it was funny cos thats how I used to make maps as a teenager. So please forgive that and some of the silly things I added like bike jumps and hopefully not too opaque and tedious puzzles. Anyway I made this about a year ago and it has just sat on my hard drive and I have not been able to convince anyone I know to play it so thought I would try and find somewhere to upload it online, i tried itch.io but seems unliikey anyone will find it on there, but then I found here where people are actually uploading and playing maps which is great! Hope someone can get a laugh out of it and it isn't too painful to play ha ha.. Would love to get some feedback and I may update if it's something simple and not too time consuming to fix.

One last thing is I definitely recommend saving your game occasionally, as some of the fights are pretty unfair.

...Well, after a 20-year break, this is close to the equivalent of a 'first' map...
And, as such, not too bad! ;) Welcome back after the extended break!
You'll probably notice that Quake has grown quite a bit in the meantime. I hope you'll grow with it; the ideas are there, so now you've been knocking off some rust with these maps, i expect great things in the future.
Some starting points:
- lighting
- choosing a theme and sticking to it
- the new, extended architechture and all the nice little effects
and so on.
All in all - thanks for your efforts, thanks for sharing and welcome back!

Thanks so much for the review! Haha was my pleasure to share, after the amount of time I put into this just to have it sit on my computer and never be played, I really needed someone to play it just to justify all the time I put into it! Now I know where to find people who are keen to play single player quake maps, I am much more motivated to make another one. I would like to try and make a scary one cos I am a big fan of survival horror games. Will def be a while before I get around to it as I have a heap of other things that need doing, but I'll come back to it eventually. In the meantime I'm going to read all the tutorials, guides, and level design tips in the articles section of this site and learn some new stuff for the next one!
Many ideas somewhat chaotically tied together by a narrative. Some of these ideas were not to my taste, but in the end I had fun. I went shopping. Thank you.

Thanks for playing through it! Glad you had fun even if not all the ideas hit the mark. It's great to know people are still keen to play single player quake maps.
