Quake 30th Anniversary Limits Jam

I've really enjoyed all 16 maps over the past two weeks. Whether the creators were newcomers or veterans, everyone gave it their all. Some of the maps were challenging to play, but that—along with the variety of styles—is exactly what I liked about them.

I liked most of the maps, 2-3 I didn't like so much, as mostly in jams.
Solid fun.

Restrictions really breed creativity. Some of the most fun and varied maps I've played in a while. Sure some limits pose a challenge that force less details and big moments in maps, but with some clever planning authors managed make cool scenes and encounters.

My favorite maps were ones that really challenge you on gameplay. Map by H was really pushing difficulty with minimal design feeling like a classic Quake map, but much more attention demanding. Absolutely amazing map.

Several other maps also gave me great inspirations and ideas to build on top of. Just a joy to explore this jam as a player and a mapper.

Amazing map pack, really delivers that classic Quake feel

Most maps were fine, it's rare to see a Mazu map (Kurvaaja) to be the worst map of a pack. Was that shitty first room with the things pushing you in the void really necessary? Was it really necessary to put a gold key right behind the silver key door?

Softi's map was broken (after killing the 1st fiend on the final fight, it said "1 more to go", but the 2nd fiend (or whatever was to come next) did not spawn.

  • Like E1m2 but worse by AGCS: A Nice E1M2 homage with some twists and turns and a more spacious playfield. It feels like a doom map in quake.
  • Parallel Machinery by Tonhao: Well executed classic base map with some cleverly designed combat situations. I wasn't able to get the quad damage tho :(
  • The vaults of terror by Zigg: Love the verticality and connectivity of this runic map. Nice use of shadows to hide monster encounters that give it that classic feel too.
  • Brick Church... call that a Brirch by Softi: Short and sweet with a cool final encounter and a nice theme.
  • Wooden wickedness by Skorly: I Like the open-ended space to explore and combat. It offers something different on the map pack.
  • I'd love to pull the wires from the wall by Scampie: Very consistent map for the jam with a dark base theme. Feels like a very modular construction in a good way with a nice mix of exploration and combat and some good secrets.
  • Envious Position by RecycledOJ: love the tight and twisted construction of this map and the green brick theme.
  • Irtyu by Moko: Nice IkBlue palace with great gameplay.
  • Buried Fort by IC: Love the choice of multiple paths to approach this map. All situations/rooms have their own theme and flavor.
  • Kurvaaja and Kohotin by Mazu: More mazu maps!
  • An Even Worse Place by Chris Holden: More CH maps! Nice bad place homage.
  • Contentious Cistern by Clenow: Love the cool cistern theme and the spacious designed of this map.
  • Azure Heresy by D_agger: It feels like a map made by the original quake team after they got more experience designing sp maps.
  • The Bathroom window To Cththon by H4724: A perfect torture chamber to close the jam by no other than its host!

It's very impressive how much you can fit into 1.44MB of map.

Sometimes, especially in Mazu's larger map, it was almost too much (I did resort to noclipping around with show bounding boxes on to find out where I was supposed to go next, as I got lost in both), and some of the maps were arguably a little *hard* in Easy.

However, the actual triumph of making moderately modern-design-sensibility maps with the limits of the original levels outweighs this.

Perfectly done, Jam, with the taste of Professional Map Makers.
I love it.
Thank you, Guys, for your time and labor.

Great jam! Maps are really unique, universal.

Solid and varied, some very vanilla and some quite fresh with a lot of cute details. Loved the 2 Mazu maps, very open and tactical. Can't exactly think why but I really liked Azure Agony, especially the sewer, felt it had just enough nice moving parts with a nice art pass. I also liked that a few of these maps have a lot to explore with good secrets and quite lively combat, it's very impressive what can be done with the limitations. Mazu's floppies might have been 1.44tb though.

I assume you mean Azure Heresy? Azure Agony is e4m7 from the original game.
