An excellent little time. I took a little longer with the mod than the listed time, but it made for a nice afternoon's diversion. I'd love to see what more this team of artist and mastermind could come up with next.
The level design was certainly interesting. I could sort of tell where the creator of this mod started and where they picked things back up. Things definitely became more action-focused and fast-paced on the final level, and the last two had no secrets at all (totally fine). Here are my thoughts on the levels.
Map start was fun. Great introduction to the new enemy, I loved being in the eerie hall of them and seeing one "on display", alongside the new weapon. Then, being able to fight one head-on, and being shown the weak-point directly afterwards was a very nice introduction. I always love searching for the Nightmare skill, and this one was a simple discovery (not a bad thing).
First level was good. Theming was interesting, the "red" base was just that. Second level was probably my favorite. Felt like a very good little level, sort of old-school in simplicity. Third one was... cool, I liked the idea and the "bosses" found towards its end, but I almost had wished it had been a traditional level itself given the unique environment, low-gravity, and "silence". I feel this level has more potential. Fourth level was great. It felt like it was starting to push me more, and, as I previously stated, felt more fast-paced. A decent challenge for a final level. Oh, and I absolutely loved blowing up that giant brain.
As for the Automaton, I feel this was a great showcase for the monster, and I would love to see it really be put to use in future maps. It has a very strong design and sounds great, I love the weakness on its back as well. It has potential. As for the event horizon maker, it is an interesting gun, the recoil was a little much (it go brrr), but it didn't really bother me. What did bother me a little more was the quality gap between the Automaton and the EHM. A little extra tweaking to it and the space suit would really clean the experience up nicely, but this matters very little since this would be up to the artist and mod creator.
Finally, I really really enjoyed the music. The initial tracks were eerie and fit well with a Quake map set, and the final track was a real bop. I was nodding my head to it the whole time.
Great work. I'd love to see (and hear) more.
