What a wonderful pack!

Really beautiful maps in a lot of styles... and a lot of new textures, matching the maps. There is any- and everything here: turtle maps, liminal spaces, smooth and detail-packed, and so on...

This could very well be a demo for what Quake is nowadays.

Well done, everyone! Thanks for Your work, and thanks for sharing!
Probably the most visually striking set of maps I've ever played.
It's a shame that many of the maps weren't polished enough. Turns out making textures is really time-consuming.

Obviously, all of the mappers did a lot more work than usual here, generating their own textures...

...and I do feel like the maps that turned out best have been the ones with no (or almost no) combat, where you can appreciate the vibes. Gnorlio's map is striking in monochrome, and Rorybabory achieves a strong "post-apoc ruin" vibe, neither with any monsters to distract you from the experience.

Of the maps with monsters, I think Naitelveni's is the most effective with her usual striking sense of design and an interesting tiered structure for level collectables.

I should also shout out the start map, which makes space to show off the maps that didn't make it in a "graveyard", so we can appreciate the texture design that did get done. I also appreciated the multi-tiered nightmare secret progression! Even if I am never going to play on Nightmare

Amazing visuals, less focus on combat for most of the maps but the few maps that did have combat it's quite good and punchy. I do second the sentiment that an event like this could have been suited to more exploratory or art piece style maps.

Big mix of maps here, and as it is, a little more weighted towards either micro maps or entirely combatless maps dedicated to showing off the (all very nice) textures made just for this set, and there's a few more substantial ones where it feels the reach exceeded the grasp of their authors. I'm sure a lot of this is down to having to budget time for both making a map and making the art for it, I wonder though if it would have been better to make the entire thing more like an explore jam just to bring expectations for what it'll be more in line. I did really like looking at all the cute textures people made though. Just to pick a few out:

  • Gnorlio's Woodrings - its really hard to get creative with Quake's very small number of grayscale colours, so such a diverse set of interesting and very unquakeish textures stand out
  • Purplemarshmallow's Night with a thousand eyes - the way the textures are oriented to give the impression of warping around light sources was a really interesting look
  • Quiet's Crazy Crayon Castle - again very unquakelike and very distinct and its own style with lovely childlike scribblings all over the walls
  • RoryBabory's Remants of the fallout - you can practically feel the dust choking the air, really nice devastated concrete set

This map jam has been one of the best experiences I've lived in Quake mapping... Playing and also making a map for it... Making my own textures is an achievement for me that I'm proud of :), also congrats to others that whether had or not experience with 2D art that made their own textures, you are all awesome for doing it!

Let's keep creating amazing things!
