Bestiary Jam

The creativity of some mappers never ceases to amaze me. When I read the description, my first thought was, "How exciting can a map with only 13 monsters really be?" I was quickly proven wrong. These are excellent maps, full of clever ideas, fun tricks, and creative surprises.

nice concept for a jam theme, and some nice looking maps, but over all this was a real mixed bag for me. there was a lot of unique puzzle-y stuff here, but it felt like some of these maps were tuned far too punishingly to make them challenging where i feel like i would've enjoyed them more if they'd had just been a "oh, cool, i did the thing" and moved on

chris holden - nice 'quake condensed' style map, liked all the callbacks to id maps, and i found all the secrets as i went. this was cool straightforward map, think my only complaint is that some of the colored lighting felt a bit off

ic - liked the humor of this with the rotfish taunting you all the way through, and it was cool monsters got 'reused' through teleports to snipe at you before you fought them. the shambler at the end was a bit mean though and destroyed me instantly without any cover. also as a note for this map and some others: you should break up centerprint messages longer than 40 characters with newlines, not all engines display longer lines than that and you have to open the console to read the full line

alexunder - nice looking classic runic map, and i liked the way you are hitting buttons and toggling walls throughout, but got annoyed by the amount of times it felt like enemies were in my face in a tight hallway and i only had a grenade launcher to deal with it so i had no choice but take self damage. teleporting shambler at the end was neat

razzzor - cool looking map, and i really like the concept of hunting the monsters by essentially looking for secrets everywhere, that was fun... but there were also a number of places where you can drop down to while exploring that are essentially death traps because there's no way to get back in bounds without noclip, which feels bad for a map where you're meant to explore nooks and crannies

comfybythefire - whew, really spooky surreal level. liked the modified textures and there's so many cool effects and memorable scripted setups... the spawn's pain maze will haunt me forever, and i nearly killed myself with grenades trying to airshot the bouncy vore. great work

auhsan - really nice looking idbase map, and a unique take on the theme making a map where you don't kill all the monsters. took a bit for me to understand what was going on in the first area because i was distracted with a grunt shooting me and ignoring the centerprint, but after that it was a fun puzzlebox of a level, and i liked the humor of it

pulsar - great looking map with some nice scripted sequences, and again fun use of rotfish as an evil mastermind... but i feel each challenge went on a bit too much and some of the situations were a bit too annoying to deal with, the 'use ogre grenades to jump up to axe buttons' area in particular. also ran into a bug where the vore that descends in the zombie room got crushed by its own platform (just quake things)

kell - just a good runic map that felt like it was trying to be a classic quake map that made you forget it was limited by the jam's theme. i only ended up getting the GL secret my first time through, the rest were well hidden and were fun to go find on a second play

mazu - sorry to say, i was not a fan of this. all the rapid fire superspike traps and explosions that spawn more explosions and lack of armor/health while trying to sneak around and recover just your basic weapons made this too frustrating of a challenge rather than something that was fun for me
I had a blast with these maps. Nice design of the levels and very creative ideas. Love the sections where you had to make the enemies shoot certain buttons. Many thanks for the work and time everyone!

Most if not all of these maps are visually stunning. It is no surprise with guys like Kell and Pulsar on the team! Lighting, shadows, architecture, creativity... It's all here.

Pulsar's map is bat shit fun, insane and hard as nails. Had me on a whole emotional journey of pain and pants shitting. Story was deeeper and hit much harder than expected. However one really annoying thing those 3 red switches with teleporting enemies were way too deep into the wall, I had to angle myself perfectly while getting grenaded lol. I felt like I was being trolled (unless that's psychopathically intentional).

Kell's map - incredibly executed, beautiful and atmospheric. Super stoked to see this legend making new maps! Quite tough floating platform section but not too much for experieced player.

Chris Holden's map looked INCREDIBLE with beatiful and logical lighting, pitch black hallways, great color combinations. Highly polished aesthetically, geometrically and gameplay wise. Very fun and atmospheric.

Razzor - This mapper got some serious skills, I just recently rated his map the sleeper hit of a previous jam (In Name Only). You've outdone yourself on this jam as well. Great art style, again a mishmash of inspiration but very pleasing on the eye. Gamplay feels seasoned and intelligent. Super stoked to see what this talent has in store for us!

Based on the description, it looked like easy-peasy, but it wasn't so easy to complete.
Thank you, guys, for your time and labor.

Limiting mappers to precisely 13 monsters (one of each) has predictable results: the majority of the maps are puzzle-ly affairs, using environmental dangers, traversal challenges (and limited weapons) to make the provided roster count.
To be honest, I found the results a bit variable: I am not the greatest at traversal, and I fell off various bits of geometry a lot during my playthrough (my current save on Kell's map is on a quite early bit where I've failed to make the jump to a moving platform over a void about 15 times in a row...).
That said, there's also some good map design in there, and apparently the collective unconscious of the Quake mapping community agrees that the rotfish is the secret mastermind of the entire mythos...
