[gmsp3tw.bsp] - Day of the Lords (2004) by Howard "GlassMan" Shaw

One of my all time favorite quake maps. This map is pretty much the definition of "Letting the textures do the work" with the combination of superb texture usage and chunky architecture. It feels like something out of Unreal 1.

[alk_derelict] Derelict Freighter by Paul "plaw" Lawitzki (2021)

plaw did an incredible job at making this map feel absolutely gargantuan. It isn't just because it's physically big and open either, but also because many times in-between combat you will find yourself just wandering around and looking afar at the cold, barren walls and machinery in the distance, hinting at the history of the environment before you made your way into it. Some really memorable setpieces too, like the laser gun room (second screenshot). I remember playing it back in the first Alkaline jam and it truly deserves the spot it earned in the main Alkaline mappack.

[jam2_tronyn.bsp] Koshta Belorn by Tronyn (Func Map Jam 2, 2014)

An absolutely massive cavern with a crumbling temple complex in it, built over the course of only ~three weeks as part of the func_board's second map jam. An overhauled version of this map was briefly shown in a trailer for the upcoming Mjölnir mod and I cannot wait to see this behemoth expanded and improved even more.

Another one from the same jam as the post above, I've always loved the unique ways PuLSaR has the player enter and exit this map (no spoilers in case anyone hasn't played it yet).

[plaw02.bsp] Waldsterben by Paul Lawitzki (2022)

Waldsterben's forest setting is not something that is attempted often in Quake mapping, let alone pulled off to this degree of success. Add some snappy, Copper-based gameplay to the beautiful visuals and you get one of my personal highlights of 2022 so far.

One of my all time fav maps. I wish for some continuation. Like you enter that runic dungeon at the end of this map and thru that dungeon you visit next part of the forest. Could be great. Maybe some ruins in the forest

[ad_heresp2.bsp] Imhotep's Legacy by Heresy (2021)

A massive Egyptian complex with some very cool environmental storytelling, Imhotep's Legacy is a sprawling epic of 400+ monsters, nicely choreographed quad runs and even a few pretty clever puzzles. Although not part of the main Arcane Dimensions package, this map is right up there with ad_tears, ad_swampy etc. both in terms of visuals and gameplay.

Please don't post so many screenshots of the same map. I think four is probably a good maximum, although you should aim for one if possible. I hope that this restriction will challenge people to take better screenshots.

[s1m1.bsp] - Shadow Gate (2012) by Sock

In The Shadows is a mod that turns Quake into a stealth game, complete with the essential mechanics that define it. One of the maps included in the demo is a very cool reimagining of Quake's first level made for In The Shadows. I really like his texture edits with all the trims for arches and such. Sock's stuff has been a pretty big inspiration for me when I was getting my foot into Quake mapping. I'm glad that his stuff exists.

[jam2_lunaran.bsp] - Persia Inversion (2014) by Lunaran

A small and punchy map set in a temple buried within a volcanic cavern. IKwhite is one of my favorite texture sets, and seeing his take on the theme with his own texture edits and theme make this one of my favorite maps. It's short, sweet, and aesthetically pleasing.
